Girl Scouts Honors Dr. Martha G. Lavender and other local women in East Alabama


GADSDEN, AL. – February 12, 2018 – Girl Scouts of North-Central Alabama will host the East Alabama One Smart Cookie Celebration on Wednesday, March 7 at noon at the Historic Pitman Theater in Gadsden. This event will raise money the organization, recognize outstanding Women of Distinction in East Alabama and showcase projects and activities by local Girl Scouts.
From the welcome to the Women of Distinction presentation, the entire celebration will be girl-led. Local Girl Scouts will showcase STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) projects, community service initiatives and more. Attendees will have the opportunity to interact with local Girl Scouts.

“I hope community members will come out to see what smart cookies these Girl Scouts are,” said Karen Peterlin, chief executive officer of the Girl Scouts of North-Central Alabama.

“We are the organization creating—through our skill-building Girl Scout Leadership Experience—the female leadership pipeline. The go-getters, innovators, risk-takers, and leaders of tomorrow,” Peterlin said.

“We’re excited to watch local Girl Scouts interact with the impressive Women of Distinction in East Alabama who serve as role models for all girls.”

The Women of Distinction Awards pays tribute to women who have made special contributions to their community through civic, academic or professional involvement and are exemplary role models for today’s girls.   

Honorees Include:

Dr. Martha G. Lavender, Gadsden State Community College president, will receive the Frances E. Couch Lifetime Achievement Award.

The Frances E. Couch Lifetime Achievement Award is given annually to one woman from East Alabama who has distinguished herself through professional, community, or humanitarian efforts, and it is named after Frances E. Couch, a long-time business and community leader in the East Alabama area. The 2017 honoree was Stephanie Hill Alexander of Honda Manufacturing of Alabama.

The 2018 East Alabama Women of Distinction Honorees are:

• Carol Kirk, Community Outreach Coordinator, Eastman
• M. Kay Moore, Director, Downtown Gadsden, Inc.
• Nanda Patel, Owner, Summit Investment Group, LLC

Proceeds from the East Alabama One Smart Cookie Celebration help to provide low income and underserved girls in local communities the same access to the Girl Scout Leadership Experience as girls in traditional troops.
